It’s been a quiet few days as Ireland has taken a breather from racing, but it’s back with a bang as we head to Gowran Park for Thyestes Day. It’s a brilliant day of racing and I really hope the fog clears up a bit in the afternoon. We will have 11 runners and we have 1 reserve.
HELL ON EARTH is the first of our runners this afternoon, in the handicap hurdle over 2 miles. He had his first taste of handicapping on his last run and we have decided to put 5lb claimer Sean O’Keeffe on board to help him out.
We don’t have anything for the second race but we do have two super stars for the Grade 2 Galmoy Hurdle. APPLE’S JADE was in top form when she won the Frank Ward last time out and she has very good form over 3 miles. It will be no easy task against the fresh Benie Des Dieux but Davy Russell will help to get the best out of this mare. DEATH DUTY makes his long awaited return, having been off the track for just over two years. He was a very good chaser and hurdler before his layoff and this will be the ideal race to get him back on track. Rachael Blackmore will take the ride.
We skip another race before heading for the feature Thyestes Handicap Chase where we have 6 runners. DOUNIKOS will be carrying the most weight out of our runners. He has won the a Grand National trial and will have the additional help of 5lb claimer Barry Browne. BORICE was our Galway Plate champion over the summer and didn’t quite take to Newbury on his last assignment. Daryl Jacob will be flying in for the ride. MONBEG NOTORIOUS was a previous winner of this race. He’s off a higher mark now then when he won this in 2017. He too will have the help of a 5lbs claimer, in the shape of Sean O’Keeffe. ROARING BULL was our Christmas Festival hero as he took the Paddy Power in brilliant style at the last gasp. It will be a lot to expect the same sort of run from him here but he is the chosen mount of Davy Russell. NOBEL ENDEAVOR hasn’t quite been loving his racing of late but was a classy horse in his time. He is off a very low weight of 10st 7lbs and will be ridden by Donal McInerney. GENERAL PRINCIPAL rounds off our declared runners. He has been running very well in his races and is off a low weight of 10st 5lbs and we have helped him by putting up 5lbs claimer Conor McNamara. Finally we have the second reserve OUT SAM. This horse ran a very good race over the cross country fences at Cheltenham last time but needs two horses to come out.
After the excitement of the big race we have CHOSEN MATE in the beginners chase. He has been running well but running into a few very good horses. This looks a bit softer then a few of his past runs so we will be hoping he can run to his best. Davy Russell will ride.
Finally we have HOMME D’UN SOIR in the bumper who will be partnered by Jamie Codd. This horse has come to us from France and looks like a nice type. These races are very competitive and we hope he can put in a good performance.
We wish all the runners and riders the very best of luck and for a safe return.
